Unit Conversion used in Civil Engineering

 Unit Conversion
Unit conversion simply means to convert the given one unit to required another unit. For instance,
Conversion of one system of unit into another system of unit like meter to inch, feet to meter, millimeter to feet and so on.
We can do it using different system of units available. Some of them are mentioned below:-
1)CGS System of Unit Measurement:
            a) Unit of Length is cm
            b)Unit of mass is gm
            c)Unit of Time is second
2)MKS System of Unit Measurement:
            a)Unit of Length is m
            b)Unit of mass is kg
            c)Unit of Time is second
3)*FPS System of Unit Measurement:
            a)Unit of Length is ft
            b)Unit of Mass is Pound(Lb)
            c)Unit of Time is second
*Note:- FPS is no more in use nowadays.

In year 1960, 11th general conference of weight and measures introduced International System of Units aka. SI unit. The International Standard Organisation(ISO) and International Electro-Chemical Commission endorsed this system later in 1962.

Fundamental Units of SI System:

S.N           Fundamental Quantity            SI Unit                 Symbol
a.                     Length                              Meter                      m
b.                     Mass                                Kilogram               Kg
c.                      Time                               Second                     s
d.                 Temperature                         Kelvin                   K
e.                  Electric Current                  Ampere                  A
f.            Luminous Intensity                 Candela                   cd
g.         Amount of Substance                  mole                     mol

Example of Some Unit conversion:

#1 To get Milligrams from grams you multiply the grams by 1000
i.e,     12g =12*1000 mg
                 =12000 mg
#2. To get feet from meter you multiply the meter by 3.281 i.e
           1 m = 3.281 ft
           45 m = 45*3.281 ft
                    =147.645 ft
